Resume Tips
Make a good first Impression
Your resume is the first thing an employer sees from you. Most employers will use a resume to decide whether you move on to the next stage of the employment process. Ensure that it's clean and not creased or smudged. Make it count!
Tailor your resume
You should tailor your resume for each job. Different employers are looking for different experiences and skills. Make sure your resume show cases your most relevant experience.
Begin with your Strengths
Set the scene with your strengths first and urge the employer to read on.
Detail your Accomplishments
Put a lot of detail into your major accomplishments and outline the major contributions you have made to each job.
Work History
This should be concise. List your skills, how you used them, and what you achieved. Start with your most recent job. Do not leave gaps in your work history; people will wonder what you are hiding.
Career objective
Include a clear and concise career objective, which should not contradict the job you are currently applying for.
Be Concise
Use lists and dot points, always include examples but avoid long paragraphs.
Be Clear
Make sure it is clear, sounds interesting and is easy to read and understand.
Type up your resume
Always use a computer to create a resume, this way it looks professional and is easily modified. Preferably create your resume as a word document, as this is a widely accepted format.
Layout
Layout is important. Make sure that each page is formatted the same. Keep to the same font and size throughout. Keep lots of white space on the page to make it easy to read.
Simple
Remember to keep it simple!
Cover Letter
Always use a cover letter for your resume. Your cover letter should address each key point or selection criteria from the advertisement.
Written References
Letters of recommendation (reference) are generally not highly regarded due to abuse such as fraudulence and dishonesty. Instead provide at least two verbal work referees, preferably people you reported to and their contact details.
Proof reading
Always use your computer's spell checker and then have someone review your resume and cover letter.
