THIS NATIONAL SAFETY BULLETIN HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO PROVIDE OUR TEAM MEMBERS WITH GENERAL GUIDANCE ON HOW TO MANAGE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH EXPOSURE TO DIESEL FUMES IN THE WORKPLACE.What is Diesel Exhaust? Diesel exhaust comes from engines burning diesel fuel. It is a complex mixture of gases, vapours, liquid aerosols and particulate substances. These substances are the products of combustion. The main chemical components of diesel exhaust emissions are:Gases and vapours–these are mostly the gases found in air like nitrogen, oxygen, water vapour and carbon dioxide. There are also hazardous chemicals like nitrous oxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and carbon monoxideFine particles known as diesel particulate matter (DPM) including fine carbon particles. Hazardous chemicals known as poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) adhere to the surface of the carbon particles. DPM can act like a gas and stay airborne for long periods of time. DPM can penetrate deep into the lungs because of its small sizeWorkplace Exposure to Diesel Exhaust: The major source of workplace exposure to diesel exhaust on a mine site is from heavy vehicles that use diesel fuel like haul trucks, bulldozers and excavators. Diesel exhaust may also be generated from stationary power sources like generators and winch motors including those mounted to vehicles. Levels of exposure can be higher in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas where the concentration of exhaust can build up like in heavy vehicle repair workshops or underground. Workers who may be exposed to diesel exhaust include; operators, miners, truck drivers and vehicle maintenance workers.What are the Health Effects of Exposure to Diesel Exhaust Fumes? Exposure to diesel exhaust can cause both short- term (acute) and long term (chronic) health effects. Short-term (Acute) effects Short term exposure to high concentrations of diesel exhaust can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs and cause light-headedness, coughing, phlegm and nausea. Very high levels of diesel exhaust exposure can lead to asphyxiation from carbon monoxide poisoning. Long-term (Chronic) effects Long term exposure can worsen asthma and allergies and increase the risk of heart and lung disease. Diesel engine exhaust emissions contain many known carcinogenic substances, for example PAHs adhere to the surface of the DPM. DPM is easily inhaled into the respiratory tract and there is epidemiological evidence which indicates ongoing exposure to diesel exhaust emissions may result in an increase in the risk of lung cancer.How can Diesel Exhaust Exposure be Minimised? Use better air flow, increasing air flow is a safe way to minimise worker exposure. Diesel exhaust in enclosed areas including when engines are idling or under maintenance can be reduced using local exhaust ventilation (LEV), extraction or general ventilation including improved natural air flow. LEV systems remove diesel exhaust before it gets into the air you breathe. Tailpipe or stack exhaust hoses can be attached to a stationary vehicle running indoors and exhausted to outside with an exhaust extraction system where it will not re-enter the workplace or contaminate other areas. Operators must regularly monitor cabin odours/fumes and immediately report any concerns they have to their Supervisor. If during the course of work operators encounter odours/fumes entering the cabin of the equipment being used, they must immediately shut down the equipment, remove themselves from the hazardous environment and report the event to their Supervisor for immediate investigation.Use Safer Work Practices All diesel engines should: • have regular maintenance, frequent tune-ups and the exhaust system checked for leaks, • be turned off whenever possible rather than leaving them idling, and • be fitted with emission control devices (air cleaners) like collectors, scrubbers and ceramic particle traps—these should be checked often and replaced when dirty. Cracks or holes in cabins of plant with diesel engines and their doors and windows should be sealed to prevent diesel exhaust from seeping in. These should be checked regularly and repaired immediately if leaks are detected. The number of diesel-powered plant and workers in the exposure area should be reduced, where reasonably practicable. Workers should be provided with information on hazards associated with diesel exhaust and how to minimise exposure.Consider use of appropriate PPE: Respirators are the least effective method of minimising diesel exhaust exposure and should only be used when it is not possible to control diesel exhaust exposure in other ways. Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) may be appropriate in some situations however you should get advice from a competent person like an occupational hygienist if you are not sure. Specific types of respirators must be used to reduce diesel exhaust exposure. P2 disposable respirators may be suitable if the concentration of vapour in the diesel exhaust is low. Half or full-face respirators with a filter cartridge that protects against gases, organic vapours and particles are generally more suitable. Wednesday 28 April is World Day for Safety and Health at Work and Workers' Memorial Day. The day provides an opportunity to reflect on how to prevent work-related occupational diseases, deaths, injuries and illnesses. It is also a day to remember those that have died from a work-related injury or illness. While the number of work-related fatalities in Australia has been steadily decreasing over the last decade, any workplace death is tragic and unacceptable. The latest finalised data shows that in 2019, 183 workers were fatally injured at work. By raising awareness of work health and safety (WHS) issues and taking action to eliminate or minimise health and safety risks at work, we can help prevent further work-related fatalities and injuries. The World Day for Safety and Health at Work theme for 2021, as set by the International Labour Organization, is anticipate, prepare and respond to crises and invest now in resilient OHS systems. The theme acknowledges the impact that the global COVID-19 pandemic has had on our working lives and the importance of building an effective, resilient and adaptable WHS framework. Workplaces can do this by undertaking risk management that is planned, systematic and covers all reasonably foreseeable hazards and associated risks. A risk assessment can be undertaken with varying degrees of detail depending on the type of hazard and the information, data and resources that you have available. WHS risk management can be as simple as a discussion with your workers or involve specific risk analysis tools and techniques developed for specific risks or recommended by safety professionals. For some complex situations, expert or specialist advice may be useful. See our risk mitigation webpage for a step-by-step guide to managing WHS risks. It is important to remember to also manage psychological and mental health risks. Under WHS laws, you must eliminate or minimise the risk to psychological health and safety arising from the work carried out by your business or undertaking as much as you reasonably can. Do you want to freshen up your resume for 2019? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Keep reading for WorkPac’s guide on crafting a great resume.Use dot points instead of paragraphsThere is nothing worse than digging through an over-complicated resume to try and find what a person’s skills and experience are. Make sure your resume is straightforward and easy to read, and always lay out the information in dot points instead of paragraphs. This is so much quicker and easier for a recruiter or employer to read!For example, instead of writing:In my previous position at X, I supervised a team of 35 people. This experience means I have a wealth of knowledge on supervising for projects in construction, as well as strong leadership skills. I am also very organised, so I am able to successfully work to deadlines.Put it into dot points:• Previously supervised team of 35• Strong leadership skills• Knowledge on construction supervising• Organised• Able to meet deadlinesMake your work history countIt’s important to include the right information when outlining your work history. We recommend including the following:1. The name of the organisation/business you worked for and your job title.2. The month and year you started and finished in the role.3. Make sure you include a list of your skills, experience and qualifications. For example, if you are an operator make sure you expand this and explain the types and sizes of machinery that you have experience operating. Don’t forget to include your RIIs and Site Authorisations with your application.4. Duties: in dotpoints, list all your duties in that role and the work you completed day-to-day.5. Achievements: you should also outline in dotpoints any great achievements you had in that role. For example, if there an instance where you were able to make the workplace more efficient or helped improve workplace culture, make sure to include it. Also include any awards or acknowledgements received such as employee of the month.Laying out your work history this way ensures the person reading your resume is receives the details they need without information overload. Again, remember to use dotpoints here so that it is clear and concise.Adjust your resume for the roleInstead of submitting the exact same resume for each role, modify it slightly for the role you’re applying for. Employers will outline exactly what they’re looking for in the job description, so if you really want the role you need to prove that have the skills and qualifications. For example, if the job advertisement asks for someone who is proactive and takes initiative, include under work history some brief examples of where you demonstrated that in previous roles.Don't lieThis should be an obvious one, but don’t bend the truth on what your skill-set and experience is just to get a role. If there’s a certain ticket or qualification you don’t have, or a skill you haven’t learnt yet, just be honest about that and make it clear that it’s something you’d be willing to learn or obtain if you do get the role. Here are Jennifer’s top six job tips:1. When it comes to your resume, keep it simple!The best resumes are ones that are super simple and easy to read. Or as Jennifer puts it: short, sharp and shiny! When talking about any tickets and licences, outline them in dot points instead of long paragraphs, as this is much easier for our recruiters to read and gives them the information they need quickly. It’s not just where you worked, it’s what you did:When outlining your work history in your resume, Jennifer says to make sure you provide a brief description of your duties in your previous roles. Knowing these details will help your recruitment coordinator work out what roles you can be matched to.3. Arrive to the interview preparedRecruiters want you to bring along a copy of your most recent resume and all your tickets and licences along to the interview. Keep the conversation professional and positiveBe careful to not let the conversation steer negative; Jennifer says people will often talk about disagreements with previous workmates or speak poorly of former employers, which comes across as unprofessional. Even though our recruiters are very friendly and want you to feel comfortable speaking with them in your interview, you need to keep in mind that we’re your employer.6. Be specific about the type of work you’re looking forAs Jennifer explains, if we don’t know what kind of work you’re looking for, we won’t be able to find you work. People often say that they don’t mind the work they do, or they’ll do anything, as they think it increases the roles they can be put forward for. However, it does the complete opposite. Our recruiters want to know the specifics on what roles you can do and what roles you want to do. So before the interview, make sure you know what you want and can clearly tell us! WorkPac would like to congratulate Marley, one of several WorkPac employees at the Mesa A site who have gone permanent with Rio!In late 2017 WorkPac and JobTrail underwent a recruitment drive in the Pilbara region focused on offering young Indigenous job seekers who were interested in mining a pathway into the industry. Marley was part of a Robe Valley assessment centre run by the JobTrail team where he was a standout candidate and landed a role as a trainee operator on site at Mesa A.Throughout his entire traineeship Marley’s work performance has been of the highest level and he has been a great team player. Our Site Manager for Mesa A, Kath Collins, caught up with Marley’s Supervisor Dean to learn more about what earned him a permanent position.“Marley is a positive young guy. He is a very productive worker and is always the first to put his hand up for other jobs when the trucks are down. He is a real go getter of a young bloke, and that is why we progressed him. Everyone in the team speaks highly of him. I am confident that Marley will be a great asset to our team and will go a long way with Rio Tinto” he said.When asked what advice he would give to other young people looking for a career in mining, Marley emphasised the importance of keeping a good attitude on site.“Definitely, the number one thing is to have a good attitude. Don’t let the information overload get to you or overwhelm you at first- because there is so much to learn! … There is a lot of adjusting to do at first, but ease into it and be willing to keep an open mind about it all. Be willing and eager to learn, be flexible, and give everything a go!”Kath also spoke with Marley about the best parts of the job, who spoke highly about the Mesa A site and crew.“I would have to say the People, I work with a great bunch of people who make it enjoyable to come to work and catch up. Mesa A is a great Site. The crews are pretty small, so you get to know everyone really well, and feel part of a close team. I felt part of the team from the moment I got out here. Finally, it is a great learning environment, there is always something new learn, and Mesa A and the managers are really encouraging of that”Marley is a fantastic example of how the right attitude and mindset can lead to great things, and a great role model for all those looking to crack into the industry. We would like to wish him the best of luck as he continues his mining career with Rio Tinto- we’re sure he’s going to go far!
