Rio Tinto operates the world's largest integrated portfolio of iron ore assets. These assets include a world-class, integrated network of 15 iron ore mines, four port facilities, a 1,700 kilometre rail network and related infrastructure. Rio Tinto are expanding operations in the Pilbara to epic proportions while introducing next generation technologies to deliver greater efficiency, lower production costs and improved health, safety and environmental performance.

 

About the role

WorkPac is seeking a dynamic individual with experience in Environmental Approvals, particularly in Part IV/EPBC and government regulations. The ideal candidate will have consulting experience, strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Experience in the mining or renewables sectors is preferred, and the role offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative team.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support and manage environmental approvals, including those under Part IV/EPBC and government regulations.
  • Provide advice and prepare approvals documentation, including regulatory applications.
  • Manage biological assessments and environmental impact assessments for approval processes.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external consultants to gather key information for approval submissions.
  • Commission and oversee environmental surveys and studies necessary for approvals.
  • Engage with government agencies and Traditional Owner groups regarding specific environmental approvals.
  • Participate in government engagement to aid in obtaining approvals.
  • Provide approvals advice to internal stakeholders.
  • Actively contribute to knowledge sharing within the environmental approvals team.
  • Collaborate with the team to manage priorities and deadlines effectively.

 

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Strong understanding of environmental approvals, specifically related to Part IV/EPBC, Mining Act, and other government acts.
  • Experience consulting on environmental approvals and managing related documentation (e.g., NVCP/Mining Proposals, EPA referrals, EPBC referrals).
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, especially in collaborative team settings and with regulators.
  • Strong written communication skills for preparing detailed approvals documents.
  • Developed time management and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, changing environment.
  • Preferable background in environmental approvals or a related field, such as mining or consulting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and other relevant software (ArcGIS experience is a plus).
  • Experience working on projects within iron ore, renewables, or related sectors is desirable.
  • Ability to work well in diverse teams and manage a high volume of tasks.
  • A flexible approach to changing priorities and work conditions, with the potential for part-time work.
